When comparing shoes to boots, remember, a shoe has laces or a strap to hold the foot in place, a boot, only has the instep to do the job. Therefore a snugger fit is needed. When looking for the right comparison in sizing for women, you would wear the same size or possibly down size ½ size. Example: if your shoe size is a 7 M, you will wear either a size 7 M or a size 6 ½ M. When looking for the right comparison in sizing for men, you would wear the same size 9D in a boot, as you would in a men’s 9 D or 9M shoe.
The boot should fit the foot from the heel to the ball of the foot. The ball of the foot (the widest part of the foot) should be at the widest part of the outsole. The toes should be at or just entering the toe box area, which is approximately 1 to 2 inches from the tip of the boot.
The single hardest thing for the first time boot wearers to overcome, is the fact that a boot must have slippage in the heel to fit properly. Most, if not all, first time boot wearers feel that the boot does not fit correctly if there is any slippage in the heel. There should be slippage in the heel, anywhere from ½ inch to as much as one inch, up and down. This is perfectly normal. If the heel does not slip, the heel will develop a blister because the boot too short (small). As the leather stretches, and conforms to your foot, (insoles included which this is called “the flexing of the sole”) the slippage should subside or go away in about a weeks worth of wearing.
The leather should be snug across the instep, but not too tight, which would be considered a pinching or a biting feeling. Snugness on the instep is vital for a proper fit and will stretch out and go away. If it feels like it is biting or pinching the instep, the boot is too small. If the boot is too loose on the instep, it will continue to stretch and ultimately will be too big. If this happens, you may put in a cushioned insert to take up the volume or space. Exotics like Lizard, Alligator and other hard tiled skins must be fitted comfortably across the instep and at the ball of the foot as these skins do not stretch as much as leather does.
The main reason we use all leather components in our products is that leather, unlike man made materials stretches and conforms to your foot. It also “breathes” to let the heat out, and to avoid “perspiration”.

Great Boots! Really like the styling and fit well. If you go by the philosophy of “buy them with some slip” at the heels, then get your regular size. If you're from the camp of “put 'em on tight, break 'em in, they'll stretch out to a perfect fit”, then order a half size smaller.
More good boots from Lucchese - This is my second pair of Lucchese boots and both are more than satisfactory. The goat leather on these has a grainy matte finish, not highly polished or smooth. It is soft and contributes to an excellent fit right out of the box. No break-in was required. These boots have become my favorites for casual wear.
